Dua Lipa (/ˈduːəˈliːpə/; born 22 August 1995) is an English singer and songwriter.[6][7] After signing with Warner Music Group in 2015, she soon released her first single 'New Love'.
Her self-titled debut studio album was released on 2 June 2017. The album spawned seven singles, including two UK top-10 singles 'Be the One' and 'IDGAF' and the UK number-one single 'New Rules', which also reached number six in the United States. In February 2018, Lipa won two Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.
In April 2018, the single 'One Kiss' by Lipa and Calvin Harris reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. In February 2019, at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Lipa won Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for the single 'Electricity', a collaboration with British-American duo Silk City.[8]
Dua Lipa was born in London to Albanian parents. Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is a marketing manager who is also lead vocalist in a Kosovar rock band named Oda. Her mother, Anesa Lipa (née Rexha), works in tourism. Her parents are originally from Kosovo but left Pristina in 1992.[6][7] Her father Dukagjin is the son of a historian, Seit Lipa, who was the head of the Kosovo Institute of History from 1990 to 1995. Lipa has two younger siblings, a sister named Rina and a brother named Gjin.[9] She attended Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time[10] before moving to Kosovo with her family in 2006 when her father had been offered a job in Kosovo;[5] there she attended the private school Mileniumi i Tretë in Pristina.[11] Lipa grew up listening to her father.[5][12] Her first name means 'love' in Albanian. Lipa explained 'Now I’m proud of it. Now I am. But when I was growing up all I wanted was to be called Hannah, Sarah, Ella… anything normal. Because with Dua you had to explain: I’m from Kosovo.'[13]
At the age of 14, Lipa began posting covers of her favourite songs by artists such as Pink and Nelly Furtado on YouTube.[14][15] At the age of 15, she moved back to London with aspirations of becoming a singer.[16] Lipa lived with a friend and studied at Parliament Hill School, returning to the Sylvia Young Theatre School on Saturdays.[17] She began working as a model for the online catalogue ASOS Marketplace when she was 16. She also worked as a hostess at a Mexican restaurant La Bodega Negra in Soho, and at a nightclub in Mayfair. In 2013, she starred in a television advertisement for The X Factor.[18]
In 2015, Lipa began working on her debut album for Warner Music Group.[14] In August 2015, she released her first single 'New Love',[19] produced by Emile Haynie and Andrew Wyatt.[14] She released her second single 'Be the One', in October 2015.[7][20] 'Be the One' achieved success across Europe, reaching number one in Belgium,[21] Poland and Slovakia, as well as charting within the top 10 in over 11 European territories. In Australia and New Zealand, the song became an airplay success, reaching numbers 6 and 20 respectively.[22] Lipa describes her musical style as 'dark pop'.[20] On 30 November 2015, she was revealed as one of the acts on the BBC Sound of..2016 long list.[15] Her first tour in the UK and Europe began in January 2016.[5] In November 2016, Lipa concluded her tour through Europe.[23]
On 18 February 2016, Lipa released her third single 'Last Dance', followed by 'Hotter than Hell' on 6 May. 'Hotter than Hell' became a hit worldwide, especially in the UK, where it peaked at number 15.[24] On 26 August, her fifth overall single 'Blow Your Mind (Mwah)' was released, peaking at number 30 in the UK.[24] It became the singer's first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 72.[25] 'Blow Your Mind (Mwah)' also topped the BillboardDance Club Songs chart[26] and reached number 23 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart.[27]
Lipa was featured on Sean Paul's single 'No Lie', released in November 2016.[28] The song reached number 10 in the UK.[29] The following month, a documentary about Lipa was commissioned by The Fader magazine, called See in Blue.[30] In January 2017, Lipa won the EBBA Public Choice Award,[31] and released the single 'Scared to Be Lonely', a collaboration with Martin Garrix, reaching number 14 in the UK.[32] She performed at the Indonesian TV channel's birthday SCTV and was awarded as Young and Promising International Artist at the SCTV Music Awards in May 2017.
Lipa's self-titled debut studio album was released on 2 June 2017.[33] Its sixth single 'New Rules', released in the following month, became Lipa's first number one in the UK,[24] and the first by a female solo artist to reach the top in the UK since 'Hello' by Adele in 2015.[34] Her best-selling single to date, the song also charted in the top 10 in other territories, including number two in Australia, number six in the US and number seven in Canada.[35] Lipa performed at the Glastonbury Festival in June.[36] In August, Lipa performed at the We the Fest, an Indonesian music festival in Jakarta.[37] She performed on the BBC's Later.. with Jools Holland in October.[38] In December, Lipa was named the most streamed woman of 2017 in the UK by Spotify.[39] She had four singles reach the UK top 10 in 2017, with 'Be the One', 'Bridge over Troubled Water' (a charity single for the families of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire), 'New Rules' and 'No Lie'.[40][41]
In January 2018, Lipa received nominations in five categories at the Brit Awards – more nominations than any other artist that year. She was nominated for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, MasterCard British Album of the Year for Dua Lipa, British Single of The Year and British Video of The Year for 'New Rules'. This was the first time that a female artist had received five nominations.[42] She performed at the awards ceremony held on 21 February at the O2 Arena in London and won the awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.[43]
Lipa announced via social media that she had begun working on new material for her second album.[44] She is working with MNEK, who previously co-wrote her single 'IDGAF'.[45] The singer also collaborated with electronic music producer Whethan on a song called 'High' for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack released in February 2018.[46] On 6 April 2018, Lipa and Calvin Harris released the single 'One Kiss'[47] which topped the UK Singles Chart on 20 April, making it Lipa's second UK number one;[48] Lipa provided the vocals and is also credited as a writer.[49] She performed in the opening ceremony of the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final in Kiev on 26 May.[50]
In May 2018, she said that her second album, likely released in 2019, would be heavily influenced by acts such as disco kingpin Nile Rodgers who also took active part in studio recordings[51] , the late Prince and OutKast.[52] It was also reported that she plans to have collaborations with other artists coming out later in 2018, such as one with Mark Ronson and Diplo's newly-formed superduo Silk City.[53] Ronson later confirmed the song's title would be 'Electricity'.[54] The song was released on 9 September. Lipa was also featured in 'If Only', a song from Italian singer Andrea Bocelli sixteenth studio album Sì.[55] Lipa hosted her own festival, which she has launched with her father called SunnyHill Festival. She also performed at the festival. When she returned to Kosovo for the festival, she was given the first key in Kosovo from the mayor of Pristina, Shpend Ahmeti in August.[56] Lipa performed at F1 Singapore Grand Prix in September.[57]
Lipa released the super deluxe edition from her debut studio album Dua Lipa, titled Complete Edition, with three new songs and featured with her previous collaborations with various artists in 19 October.[58] This included a collaboration with Blackpink called 'Kiss and Make Up'.[59]
In 2016, Lipa and her father set up the Sunny Hill Foundation in Pristina to donate to the citizens of Kosovo, her parents' homeland.[60]
